Ten countries have expressed an interest in hosting the European championship in 2012, UEFA announced on Tuesday.

They include joint bids from Croatia-Hungary and Poland-Ukraine as well as bids from Greece, Italy, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Italy hosted an eight-team tournament in 1980, and also staged a version of the finals in 1968 when it consisted of four teams playing two semi-finals, a third-fourth place match and the final itself.

Candidates have until July 21 to compile their bids. A short-list of three will be selected by UEFA’s Executive Committee in November and the hosts chosen in December 2006.
