Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand faces arrest after a warrant was issued following his failure to turn up for a scheduled court appearance.

The younger brother of England captain Rio Ferdinand was expected at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Monday after he was caught driving while using a mobile phone.

But the former West Ham player – who already had nine points on his licence and was set for a driving ban – didn’t turn up and Northumbria Police issued a warrant for his arrest.

“There has been no arrest at this stage,” a Northumbria Police spokesman said. “A warrant has been issued and we are aware.”

On July 13 Ferdinand was seen driving his white Range Rover while using his phone on Newcastle’s Central Motorway.
