Bayern Munich manager Felix Magath has told Croatian international Robert Kovac to leave the club if money is more important to him than success on the pitch.

Defender Kovac has snubbed a two-year contract extension at Bayern and he has been linked with a move to a number of Serie A clubs in the summer.

“Robert needs to weigh up the sporting and financial aspects,” Magath said.

“If the player thinks money is more important than success then I will not be sad if he goes. We do not need players with that attitude.”

Kovac cost Bayern €8.5m from Bayer Leverkusen in 2001 but would be free to leave for nothing in the summer.

“Players need to take a wage cut,” added Bayern vice-chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “We are not going down the Schalke 04 and (Borussia) Dortmund route.”

Borussia Dortmund’s debts are estimated to reach €134.7m by mid-2006.
