The FIFA Referees Committee has appointed Pierluigi Coliina to referee Sunday’s World Cup final.

The 42-year old financial consultant from Viareggio is widely regarded as the best referee in the world.

Collina has refereed the Argentina v England and Japan v Turkey matches during the current competition and was in charge for two matches at France ’98. He was also in charge of the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final involving Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

The Italian will be assisted by Sweden’s Leif Lindberg and England’s Philip Sharp with Scotland’s Hugh Dallas the fourth official.

Kuwaiti official Saad Mane as been appointed referee of Saturday’s 3rd place play-off.
