Controversial Christoph Daum has been appointed new coach of FK Austria to replace sacked Walter Schachner.

Confirmation of the long-expected change of coach came from general manager Peter Sveitits.

It had been no secret that the club’s multi-millionaire owner, Frank Stronach, was been searching for a new coach to match his ambitions for a great old club long in the domestic and international doldrums.

For Daum, the appointment is a further step on the road back to rehabilitation. He was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen two years ago after being exposed for cocaine use.

That also undermined his appointment as German national coach-in-waiting. A court case resulted in a E5,000 fine. Daum then spent 15 months as coach of Turkish club Besiktas.
