Chelsea manager Avram Grant believes tonight’s Champions League quarter-final encounter against Fenerbahce is a stepping stone to European and domestic glory this season.

“It is a big opportunity to do it,” he said ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final, although his side trail 2-1 from the first leg.

“We’ve spoken with the players and we know that it will not be easy.

“All this season has been very hard, with many difficulties, but having got to this stage, we want to do our best to use this opportunity.”

Chelsea lost the first leg at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium in Istanbul, despite dominating the match.

“We lost the opening game even though we were much better than Fenerbahce but the players want, like everyone at the club, to be in the semi-final,” added Grant.

“The first match was one of our good performances with the worst result.”

Although Fenerbahce have failed to win any of the last seven matches on their travels in Eurpe, their coach Zico was adamant his team would adopt a positive approach.

“We will play the way we always play,” said the Brazilian. “Our style is to be offensive and play attacking football. That is why we have got this far. It won’t be any different.

“In a game as important as this you have to be careful throughout the game and take advantage of the good spells you have.”
