Basle coach Christian Gross praised his players after his side became the first Swiss side to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League following their thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

“We believed in ourselves and the players never doubted themselves either,” Gross said.

“Of course going 3-0 ahead was superb for us after a fantastic opening 45 minutes. Perhaps we ran too hard and did too much in the first half but even when Liverpool fought back we did not doubt ourselves.”

“I know we were lucky at Anfield, but we showed such quality in this game. I have never experienced a first half like that when we were outstanding.

“I am very happy for my players, it was tense, yes, at the end, but we had played so well beforehand we deserved it.

“This is a tremendous achievement for this club to get to the last 16 of the Champions League.”
