Greek club Iraklis have taken the unusual step of fining their own players after last week’s shock UEFA Cup defeat by Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta.

The club have imposed a fine of players a record _150,000 on the squad that meekly surrendered a a 4-2 first-leg lead by losing 3-1 in Cyprus.

The loss was described by club officials as “a disgrace to the club” and the squad subsequently released a letter of apology to supporters.

Polish striker Martin Miecel was given an additional _10,000 fine and suspended two-monthwage cut for turning up for training in a pair of slippers. The club blamed the incident on a translation error but still imposed the fine.
