Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt could recover from an ankle injury in time for the visit to Anfield of Blackburn.

Kuyt, 26, suffered the injury while on international duty with Holland and it was initially feared he would be out of action for several weeks.

But the former Feyenoord forward has responded well to treatment since returning to Anfield.

Benitez told Liverpool’s website: “Dirk’s injury isn’t that bad. We can’t say when he will be able to play, but he returned on Tuesday and had more treatment.

“It would have been better if we’d been able to treat him for another two days straight after his injury, but we will wait and see how he is before deciding when he can play.”

However Benitez is likely to be without Daniel Agger on Saturday after the Denmark defender broke his right hand against Liechtenstein on Wednesday.

Mali midfielder Momo Sissoko is also doubtful with an ankle problem picked up on international duty.

Benitez added: “We also have a problem with Momo, who has hurt his ankle. He’s not been able to train since he came back.”
