Argentinian legend Diego Maradona plans to attend the World Cup final on Sunday, according to reports.

He had hoped to attend Argentina’s group matches but was initially banned by the Japanese authorities from entering the country due to his prior drug abuse.

Maradona was forced to watch Argentina’s ignominious first-round exit from a hotel room in Cuba where he is still undergoing treatment for cocaine addiction.

The former Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli and Sevilla player was allowed to attend several second-phase matches in South Korea and now the Japanese have relented and have agreed to allow him to enter the country to watch the final in Yokohama.

Maradona – regarded by many as the greatest player of all time – remains popular around the world and recently announced that he was prepared to succeed Miguel Bielsa as manager of Argentina following his country’s disappointing World Cup performances.
