Greece have shown their faith in German coach Otto Rehhagel extending his contract for two years.

Rehhagel guided Greece to an unexpected Euro 2004 triumph but he could not repeat the trick in the World Cup qualifying campaign as Greece finished fourth in a tough group containing Ukraine, Turkey and Denmark.

Rehhagel, Greece coach for four years, said he would not have made any other decision as “his heart is in Greece”.

“Now we must defend our European title,” he added.

Rehhagel’s contract has an option for another six months to June 2008 should Greece qualify for Euro 2008.

“It’s a happy day for Greek soccer, we should celebrate,” said Bolton midfielder Stelios Yiannakopoulos.

“He is the man who brought us to the top and he is the most capable for continuing the effort.”
