Former Ukrainian striker Oleg Protasov has been appointed the new coach of Steaua Bucharest.

Protasov replaces Italian Walter Zenga who was sacked in May with three games of the season left.

“Steaua is a name in international soccer and it’s a great challenge to work for the club,” said the 41-year-old Protasov. “It is a key step in my coaching life.”

He led Olympiakos to the Greek title in 2003 and also had a brief spell with Limassol in Cyprus.
