Real Madrid have strengthened their squad by making Uruguayan internationals Pablo Garcia and Carlos Diogo their first signings of the summer.

Both Garcia and Diogo are defensive players who will add balance to a Real side which has been criticised for an abundance of attack-minded players over the last two seasons.

Garcia, 28, has agreed a four-year contract after his move Osasuna. He is likely to compete with Denmark’s Thomas Gravesen for the midfield holding role.

Diogo, 21, signed a five-year contract after joining from Argentina’s River Plate. He is a right back who is can also play in midfield.

“It is a dream come true. I want to defend the team’s shirt until the bitter end,” Garcia said. “I want to thank the club for the confidence they have shown in me and hope I will be able to repay them on the field of play.”

Both players have been included in coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s squad for Real’s tour of the United States and Asia later this month.
