Louis van Gaal has vowed to stay on Barcelona coach, despite a humiliating 4-2 home defeat to ten-man Valencia on Saturday.

‘We’re in a delicate situation,’ van Gaal said after a lengthy meeting with club president Joan Gaspart after the game.

‘I’ve spoken to the players, the president, the technical staff and the medical staff and we’ve pledged to do everything possible to take the team forward.

‘We’ve also decided that Football Club Barcelona will not sign any new players because we have confidence in the current squad.’

The decision to stick with the current squad, efffectively rules out a move for Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who had linked with a move to the Nou Camp

‘We lost tonight in a manner that is not acceptable,’ van Gaal added.

‘We started badly and then we were playing 11 against 10 and we still couldn’t win. Any word I could say about the game would be one word too many.’

Barcelona’s loss was all the more embarrassing given the first-half dismissal of Valencia keeper Santiago Canizares. The defeat leaves the club 17 points behind leaders Real Sociedad and just five above the relegation zone.
