Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed talks with Arsenal over the transfer of Patrick Vieira have broken down.

Reports earlier in the week claimed that the two clubs had agreed a £23.1m fee for the midfielder but Perez has now confirmed that Real have submitted a bid but will not increase their initial offer.

“We have made our offer to Arsenal and that is as far as it goes,” Perez is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

“We will not be raising it as they want so for the moment talks have broken down.”

Vieira has been linked with a move to Spain for several weeks with most observers expecting the French international to complete his move before teh staret of the new season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has always insisted that Vieira would stay at Highbury but the player has been conspicuously silent when asked about a move.
