Fabio Capello will be revealed as the new England boss, but who will the former Real Madrid manager make his first captain?

Talks between the Football Association and Fabio Capello will continue today after negotiations over the composition of his backroom team delayed the appointment of the Italian.

Capello is expected to be confirmed as England’s second foreign coach today, but only after the conclusion of negotiations over the terms of his contract and those of his assistants, which have spilled over into a third day.

The Italian will become the best paid coach in international football with his new deal reported to be worth £6.5million-a-year.

It is understood the 61-year-old wants to bring several fellow Italians with him, including his aide Franco Baldini as an assistant.

Baldini’s situation is complicated because he is currently on a shortlist to become technical director at West Ham, but he insisted that his role would not jeopardise Capello’s appointment.

“I understand the FA has in principle said yes to me doing this job,” he said. “If I do not, I think Capello will still be England coach, but maybe he will be a little less comfortable.”

Capello is also expected to appoint three coaching staff in Franco Tancredi (the goalkeeping coach), the assistant Italo Galbiati and the fitness trainer Massimo Neri alongside Baldini, who was his sporting director at Real Madrid.

The FA confirmed on Thursday that Capello was their choice to take over as Steve McClaren’s successor.

“The board has approved his appointment as manager subject to further contract negotiations,” said an FA spokesman.

“These will continue. But there are no problems and we’re going through the process for a successful conclusion.”
