Mexico have appointed Hugo Sanchez as their new national team coach.

Regarded Mexico’s best-ever player, Sanchez, 48, won five consecutive league titles with Real Madrid in the 1980s. He played for his country more than 70 times and scored 47 goals.

He coached Pumas UNAM from 2000-2005, winning the Mexican league title twice in a row, before taking over as Necaxa caoch in September.

Sanchez replaces Ricardo La Volpe, now manager at Argentina’s Boca Juniors, who had been Mexico’s coach since 2002.

“I want us to be world champions and not limit ourselves to the quarter- or semi-finals,” he told reporters.
