A violent kick at the dugout during his side’s Champions League defeat to Basel, has cost coach Sorin Cartu his job at Cluj.
Cartu put his foot through the glass bench at Basel’s St Jakob Park, leaving it shattered as his side went down to a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday.
A statement on their official website reads: “The values and image of the club CFR Cluj cannot be associated with the actions of Sorin Cartu. For such reason we have decided to interrupt our relationship.”
The team will now be led by Alin Minteuan, who is one of the coaches at the club.
Cartu is the second coach Cluj have fired this season, after Andrea Mandorlini was shown the door in September. After winning the title, the cup and the Romanian super cup last season, under Italian Andrea Mandorlini’s, Cluj stand in 9th post in the current standings, ten points behind leaders Otelul Galati.
