The pressure continues to grow on beleaguered Barcelona president Joan Gaspart, after vice-president Salvador Alemany resign because of differences over the running of the club.
Alemany, who has been on the Barcelona board for 20 years, is the sixth vice-president to leave his post since Gaspart was elected president in July 2000. Barcelona said that Alemany had resigned “because of differences over how to deal with the club’s present situation.”
According too reports in the Catalan press, Alemany quit over Gaspart’s refusal to resign his post despite the sense of crisis emgulfing the club.
Gaspart’s position has been further weakened by the dismal record of Dutch cooach Louis van Gaal who was appointed by the Barcelona president at the start of the season but quit last month.
Radomir Antic was appointed van Gaal’s replacement at the end of last week, but his arrival did not bring about a change in fortunes at the club with Braclleona going down 3-0 to Atletico Madrid at the weekend.
Lluis Bassat, who stood against Gaspart in the race for the presidency in 2000, has called for the president to resign.
“Gaspart should leave immediately,” he said.
“The only solution is for him to call early elections because that is what the 100,000 members of the club want.”
