Polish footballinglegend, Zbigniew Boniek was today unveiled as Poland’s new national coach.
He replaces Jerzy Engel who was sacked after Poland’s poor performance at this year’s World Cup finals.
President of the Polish FA (PZPN), Michal Listkiewicz, confirmed that the 46-year-old, former Polish international will step down from his current role as vice president of the Polish FA to take up the challenge.
“Following a meeting on Sunday with two vice-presidents of the Polish Football Federation, I have decided to entrust Zbigniew Boniek with the post of coach of Poland’s national team”, Listkiewicz said.
Considered to be one of Poland’s greatest players, Zbigniew Boniek played at club level in Poland for Zawisza Bydgoszcz and then Widzew Lodz, before moving to Italy. He was a member of the Juventus side which won the European Cup in 1985.
Boniek collected 80 caps for his country and scored 24 goals during his international career, playing in three World Cup finals for Poland.
Boniek has previous coaching experience from working at Bari and Lecce during the eighties but enjoyed little success at either club.
