Everton have failed with bids to sign England striker Michael Owen and Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt.

The Real Madrid striker has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu, but he has rejected the chance of a move to Everton.

“We have been in contact with Michael and his advisors,” confirmed Everton boss David Moyes.

“Unfortunately he doesn’t see Everton as a team he would choose at this present time.”

Despite having money to spend, Moyes admitted he has found it hard to attract new players. Feyenoord’s Kuyt was another target but Feyenoord turned down a £10m bid earlier in the month.

“We offered £10m for Dirk Kuyt and that was rejected on 1 August by Feyenoord,” he added.

“I am trying to reassure fans I am in for most of the big names.

“We do have money to spend if the right players are available – but getting them in is the problem.”
