Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld might leave the club at the end of the season, club president Franz Beckenbauer has revealed.

Hitzfeld has admitted he plans to leave at the end of next season, but Beckenbauer suggested his departure could come much sooner.

“Hitzfeld has been a blessing for Bayern and you can’t be more successful than he has been but there comes a time when you’re maybe no longer in a position to motivate the team,” Beckenbauer told German television station Premiere.

Ominous;ly for Hitzfeld, Beckenbauer believesthe coach has taken the players as far as he cam.

“Ottmar was a heaven send for Bayern,” Beckenbauer added. “But there comes a point where you can perhaps not motivate the team anymore.”

“We should get together (with Hitzfeld) at the end of the season and make a decision,” he added.

Bayern’s preferred successor to Hitzfeld is Stuttgart coach Felix Magath.

“We’re waiting to see what decision Magath will make,” said Beckenbauer.

Bayern are in second place trailing nine points behind champions Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga and will finish the season empty-handed for the first time since 1995.
