A group of Inter fans attacked the players when they returned from Saturday’s win at Ascoli.

Fans at Malpensa airport shouted insults as the players arrived. In a parking lot outside the terminal, some fans turned violent, with midfielder Cristiano Zanetti suffering a bruise on his head.

Two police officers were injured when they tried to defend the Inter players.

Although Inter won 2-1 at Ascoli, supporters were angry about their disappointing Champions League exit at the hands of Villarreal on Tuesday.

“We can’t accept that the disappointment can turn into violence. … We can’t tolerate what happened at Malpensa airport,” Inter president Giacinto Facchetti said.

Despite being one of the heaviest spenders in Italian football, Inter have not won a Serie A title since 1989.
