Paolo Di Canio, Lee Bowyer and Nigel Winterburn were the highest profile casualties as West Ham began a cull of players in the wake of last weekend’s relegation from the Premier League.

In total, 10 players have been released by the club as their contracts came to an end.The other seven players whose contracts will not be renewed are John Moncur, Gary Breen, Raimond van der Gouw, Scott Minto, Edouard Cisse, Izzie Iriekpen and Clive Delaney.

Surprisingly, veteran striker Les Ferdinand, 36, was among those offered new deals as the club prepares for life in the first division.

West Ham are hoping to hold on to their most valued assets, such as England quartet David James, Trevor Sinclair, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, while they have already turned down a transfer request from Manchester United target, Jermain Defoe.
