Rangers manager Alex McLeish admitted he was relieved to be still in his job after presiding over the worst run in the club’s 132-year history.
Chairman David Murray confirmed yesterday that McLeish would stay after guiding Rangers into the Champions League knockout stage with a 1-1 home draw against Inter on Wednesday.
Rangers trail arch-rivals Celtic by 17 points and have registered a 10-game run in all competitions without a win.
“You cannot ever expect not to lose your job in a precarious game such as this,” McLeish told a news conference.
“And especially with expectation levels at a club such as this, and I am realistic about that. But I had a good chat with David and he has said plenty over the last 24 hours.
“I would just like to get on with the football side just now. We have had a magnificent result in midweek and it’s a great achievement getting to the last 16 in the Champions League.
“The past week has been pretty eventful, but it is pleasing to get a conclusion and now it is time for us to get climbing up the League.”
Rangers meet fourth-placed Kilmarnock on Sunday.
“If we don’t win we will get criticised again and the only way to put everything behind us is to keep winning,” McLeish said.
